Suppose you are given a question like the one given below:

Mukesh starts to walk towards north and traveled 30 km. He
then takes a left turn and walked 40 km. again he takes a left turn and walked
30 km. finally he takes a right turn and walks 40 km. how far is he from his
starting position and which direction is he facing?

Solution:

For solving the question, you might take 1 kilometer as 1
millimeter. You should take shorter distances so that it is easy to draw a
diagram on paper.

Now In this type of direction sense test problems, what we
have to do is to make a diagram as quickly as possible on a paper as per the
question given.

You have to think that you are travelling the distance. The most
important thing to care about is ‘in which direction the person starts’. In the
question above the person Mukesh starts in north direction as given.

Read the question very carefully first and then start as the
given points of solution are below:

Mark a dot on the paper or put your pen on the paper.

Now as the question says,

Mukesh starts to walk towards north and
travelled 30 km

Make a line going straight up as given
below and mark it 30 km. think yourself as you have traveled 30 km in the
north direction.

Now as per the question, Mukesh takes a left turn and walks 40 km. so move your line to 40 km in left direction as given below in the diagram.

The direction he is facing is west. Now measure
the total distance from the last point of his journey to the starting point and
add all the distances. The sum of the distances will be 40+40=80 km.

So Mukesh is 80 km far from the starting
point.
